HEBER CITY, Utah-Per a Sunday report in the Deseret News, former Wasatch High School Army All-American kicker Skyler Southam has a leg up on the competition for BYU football’s kicking job this autumn.
Southam, a 6’1″ 190-pound true freshman who has recently returned from a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints mission in the Chile Santiago West Mission, has the lead for the kicking job, per BYU special teams coordinator Ed Lamb.
Lamb told the Deseret News that Southam’s “field goals right now are just super.”
During a legendary career for the Wasps, Southam made 114 of 116 PAT’s and 36 of his 53 field goal attempts (67.9 percent) in his four seasons. He also nailed a career-long 53-yard kick in his senior campaign of 2015 and scored a career-high 93 points.
His 2015 contributions earned him a spot in the 2016 Army All-American Bowl at San Antonio, Texas.
Southam also set a Utah high school state record with 20 field goals in a single season with 2015. He also showed his versatility by averaging 46.8 yards per punt on 67 career punts for the Wasps.
Additionally, Southam was a U.S. Army Eastbay freshman All-American in 2012 and a Deseret News 4-A All-state second-team member in 2014. Furthermore, he was a Salt Lake Tribune All-State Class 4-A first-team member in 2015 while making this paper’s second team in 2014.
Southam is competing against senior Rhett Almond who has made 75 percent of his career field goal attempts. Almond is competing for the Cougars’ starting punting job.
