Heber City To Consider Nuclear-Powered Future

HEBER CITY, Utah-Monday night, Heber Light and Power conducted a meeting exploring the possibility of sourcing nuclear power from Idaho.

Midway mayor, Celeste Johnson, a member of the Heber Light and Power Board, reported that Heber Valley authorities are always searching for carbon-free power sources, suggesting Idaho nuclear power could be the answer.

If the proposal comes to pass, it would entail a series of small modular nuclear reactors while the technology, if employed, would be the first of its kind.

The Idaho National Laboratory of Idaho Falls, Idaho, is attracting worldwide interest for this technology.

Already, 28 municipalities have signed off on using these reactors.

Heber Light and Power has until April 2019 to sign the contract.

If it comes to pass, officials working on the project would commence construction at the Idaho facility in 2026.
