Wasatch Cross Country Gets Summer Training Underway

HEBER CITY, Utah-Wasatch High’s cross country program has installed its summer training program for both returning and prospective athletes.

The rudimentary schedule for beginning athletes consists of Monday running workouts at 7:00 am on June 18, July 16 and August 13.

This entails a 2-mile uphill run up Snake Creek starting at the Wasatch State Park Visitors’ Center. Additionally, the team will meet at the park in Midway by Ridley’s Market. This will consist of run mile repeats up Memorial Hill.

Tuesdays, the team will meet at Wasatch High’s weight room at 7:00 am for weights followed by easy mileage. This process will also be repeated on Fridays.

Wednesdays, the 7:00 am workout is for the Deer Creek Dam Trail/Soldier Hollow for a long run or short hill repeats at Soldier Park. For this, the team will meet at the Wasatch State Park Chalet.

Thursday 7:00 am workouts consist of Dutch Hollow runs to work on recovery mileage.

The cross country coaching staff also reminds athletes to make wise nutrition choices while training.

The staff also reminds athletes to carefully select the right kind of shoe to wear for workouts. The rule of thumb is that the running shoe you’re wearing should feel like a sock and suggests runningwarehouse.com is a great place to look for useful shoes at a reasonable price.

The official cross country practice sessions commence July 30 and attendance after this time is mandatory if you plan to be on the team. Two-a-days will then occur, with 7:00 am and 3:00 pm sessions. Therefore, parents are reminded to go to registermyathlete.com by July 30.

The first cross country meet for the Wasps on the season is August 17 at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City, hosted by Highland High School.

Additionally, Wasatch High is commencing junior cross country programs at both Timpanogos and Rocky Mountain Middle Schools for youths interested in joining the Wasatch High program one day.

These students will be invited to run with Wasatch High cross country runners during practice sessions.
