TEMPE, Ariz.-Monday, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its 2018 Division I Mountain Regional winners this morning and Utah men’s tennis earned four individual awards as well as one team honor.
Macedonian national David Micevski was named as the ITA’s player to watch after netting a 15-8 record this season as the ace of the Utes’ lineup.
Micevski is a two-time All-Pac-12 honoree and provides the Utes with a bright future alongside last year’s winner, Dan Little, a junior for the Utes out of London, England.
Head coach Roeland Brateanu was named as the Wilson/ITA Coach of the year for the second consecutive season and also became the first Utah head coach to win postseason awards in multiple years since F.D. Robbins was named as the WAC Coach of the Year in 1990.
The Utes went 17-2 in non-conference play and were as ranked as high as #24 in the nation en route to its first NCAA Tournament berth in more than 20 years.
Assistant coach Daniel Pollock was named the TASC Performance ITA assistant of the year and now every member of the Utes’ current staff has now won this award, with Brateanu earning it in 2014 and fellow assistant, Graeme Cox, in 2007.
Dutch national Egbert Weverink became the fourth Ute to earn the ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award, joining Brateanu in 2004, Brandon Owen in 1997 and Cox in 1992.
Weverink was one of two senior captains and helped lead the Utes into postseason competition by playing in the middle of the singles lineup and teaming with junior Joe Woolley, a native of Boston, England, in doubles action.
Additionally, the Utes were recognized for off-court work and as one of seven schools to earn an ITA Community Service Award. Recently, the Utah men’s tennis team joined with former Utes football player Stevenson Sylvester to organize and send school supplies to the Dominican Republic.
