Tom Holmoe To Retire As BYU Director of Athletics At End of Spring Sports

PROVO, Utah-Per Tuesday afternoon news, BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe announced his retirement at the conclusion of spring sports this upcoming June.

Holmoe will address the media Wednesday at 10:00 am at a press conference to be aired on BYUTV and byutv.org.

Holmoe became the director of athletics at BYU March 1, 2005 and played an instrumental role in the Cougars’ advent into the Big 12 Conference July 1, 2023.

Holmoe was named as the 2020-21 NACDA Athletic Director of the Year, confirming his tremendous achievements at the helm of the athletic department.

Holmoe starred as a defensive back at BYU from 1978-1982 and after being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 1983, played a crucial role in three Super Bowl championships.

Upon his retirement from the NFL, Holmoe returned to the BYU football program, serving as then-head coach LaVell Edwards’ graduate assistant. Holmoe then went to Stanford to serve as head coach Bill Walsh’s secondary coach and became the 49ers’ secondary coach in 1994.

Holmoe also served as the defensive coordinator and later head coach at California from 1997-2001.
