(San Jose, CA) — A San Jose State trans volleyball player is leading to forfeits from opposing teams. Four teams have opted not to play the San Jose women’s team, and the latest team to forfeit, Utah State, is being praised by the state’s governor. Spencer Cox says there needs to be a safe space for women to compete fairly and safely. The forfeitures are being seen by critics as an attack on trans-athletes, and by supporters as a legitimate complaint about safety issues in women’s sports. The player at the center of the controversy is allegedly able to spike the ball at 80 miles per hour, and one of her own teammates says she fears for her own safety in practice.
