FARMINGTON, Utah-Thursday, per reports, former Weber State men’s basketball head coach Dick Motta will be enshrined in the Big Sky Conference Hall of Fame this summer.
The 92-year old Motta, who will turn 93 September 3, will be enshrined July 20 during the Big Sky Football Kickoff Weekend at Spokane, Wash.
Motta is the fifth individual with connections to Weber State who will be enshrined. He will join men’s basketball guard Damian Lillard (2009-2012), track and field athlete Lindsey Anderson (2004-2007), football quarterback Jamie Martin (1989-1992) and track and field head coach Charles “Chick” Hislop (1969-2006).
Motta coached at Weber State from 1960-1968 and led the Wildcats from junior college status to NCAA Division I, posting a record of 164-50 (.766) in his time at Ogden.
The Utah State alum later went on to a successful NBA coaching career, spending time with the Chicago Bulls (1968-1976), Washington Bullets (1976-1980), Dallas Mavericks (1980-1987; 1994-1996), Sacramento Kings (1989-1992) and Denver Nuggets (1996-1997). In 1978, Motta led the Bullets to an NBA championship as they vanquished the Seattle SuperSonics in 7 games.
Motta led the Wildcats to Big Sky championships in 1965, 1966 and 1968 and to the program’s first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 1968.
Motta is a 1990 inductee in the Weber State Hall of Fame and received the NBA Coaches Association Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
