Lawmakers Looking To Increase Penalties For School Threat Hoaxes

(Salt Lake City, UT) — State lawmakers want to implement tougher penalties for anyone who makes hoax school threats in Utah. While such hoaxes can be classified as either misdemeanors or felonies depending on the circumstances, Representative Ryan Wilcox says the punishments for either should be strong and levied uniformly. Law enforcement personnel, education leaders, and others have shown support for the proposed changes. Wilcox says the legislation is currently being drafted for the next legislative session in 2024.
