LAS VEGAS – The Utah baseball team had a strong outing against 25th-ranked UNLV on Monday afternoon, falling to the Rebels, 3-1.
Both teams avoided big innings, with each run scored in one run innings.
Wade Gulden and Matt Richardson each had two hits to lead Utah (1-14).
Josh Lapiana pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk in the loss. Jacob Rebar allowed one run on four hits with two walks and a strikeout over 3 1/3 innings. Trenton Stoltz pitched one inning and did not allow a hit with two walks.
UNLV took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on after three singles. The Utes came back in the top of the third inning, as Richardson led off the inning with a double and scored after an error on an infield single from Christopher Rowan, Jr., to tie the game at 1-1.
The Rebels took the lead for good in the fourth inning after two hits led to a run scoring on a sacrifice fly. UNLV added an insurance run in the seventh inning after back-to-back one-out extra base hits.
UNLV is ranked 25th in the latest D1Baseball.com poll.
Utah begins Pac-12 play on Thursday, March 15, at USC at 6:00 p.m. PT.
