Hanno Möttölä and the 2008 Utah Football Team Among University of Utah Hall of Fame Inductees For 2023

SALT LAKE CITY-Per Thursday news, the University of Utah Athletics Department will honor two of its all-time best teams and six individual athletes during the UofU’s Athletics Hall of Fame induction September 22 at the Huntsman Center.

The 2008 Utes football team, which went undefeated and beat storied program Alabama, 31-17 in that season’s Sugar Bowl and Hanno Möttölä, a standout men’s basketball player for the Utes from 1996-2000 are among them.

The 2008 Utes finished the season No. 4 in the coaches poll and No. 2 in The Associated Press poll. Head coach Kyle Whittingham’s squad vanquished four ranked teams that season. In addition to the win over the No. 6 Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl, Utah also bested No. 7 Texas Christian, No. 18 Oregon State and No. 25 BYU.

They finished the season 13-0, joining Boise State as the only undefeated squad in the FBS Division I subdivision in 2008.

Möttölä averaged 12.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game during his Utah career, which saw him play for the NCAA national championship in 1998 under legendary head coach, the late Rick Majerus.

Möttölä later played for the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks for two seasons, becoming the first Finnish player to play in the NBA.

Former athletic director Dr. Chris Hill, who led the Utes into the Pac-12 and was in the position for 31 years.
