IRVING, Texas-Monday, a pair of former Utah Utes football standouts were named as nominees to the 2024 College Football Hall of Fame.
Quarterback Alex Smith (2002-2004) and defensive back Eric Weddle (2003-2006) made the initial cut of 74 semifinalists as confirmed by the National Football Foundation.
During his Utes career, Smith completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 5,203 yards, 47 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
Weddle recorded 18 interceptions, 5 sacks and 13.5 tackles for a loss during his time at Utah.
Both went onto successful careers in the NFL. Smith starred for the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins (2005-2020). Weddle, meanwhile, excelled for the San Diego Chargers, Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Rams (2007-2021).
The 2024 College Football Hall of Fame class will be announced December 10.
