Salt Lake City Diocese Receives New Bishop

SALT LAKE CITY (AP)-Per various reports, the Salt Lake City Diocese announced the naming of Oscar A. Solis as the new Bishop.

Solis is the 10th bishop in Salt Lake City Diocese history which dates back to January 27, 1891.

He replaces John Charles Wester, who was appointed to the Santa Fe, N.M. Diocese in 2015.

Solis, in comments at his press conference, stated “we are all one in God’s family.”

He stated he looks forward to working with the Salt Lake City-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and “other faith communities” in the area while petitioning for the prayers of all to do his task well.

When Solis received the call from Pope Francis, he stated he was surprised but says Pontifex’s “gentle persuasion” made it “hard to refuse” per reports.

Solis is a Filipino national who has previously labored in Nueva Ecija, Philippines as well as auxiliary bishop in Los Angeles.

Solis has made history as the first Filipino-American to be consecrated as a Catholic bishop.
