CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP)-As official national signing day ensues Wednesday morning, a star athlete in the Mid-Utah Radio Sports Network coverage area has found a Division I college football home.
Smith, a multi-threat football star for the Beavers on back-to-back 2-A state football championship teams in 2015 and 2016, signed with Southern Utah, per his Twitter account on January 14, while this was ratified officially Wednesday.
Smith was primarily featured as a tailback for the Beavers, averaging 7.6 yards a carry and running for 1,181 yards and 20 touchdowns while exceeding the 100-yard threshold five times in 2016.
As a receiver, Smith hauled in 12 passes for 299 yards (an astounding 24.9-yards per catch average) and six touchdowns as well in 2016.
For good measure, via a trick play, Smith also tossed one 55-yard touchdown pass for the Beavers.
Southern Utah’s official athletics Web site www.suutbirds.com, lists Smith as an “athlete.” It will be interesting to see how Thunderbirds head coach Demario Warren capitalizes upon Smith’s intriguing skills.
