Wasatch High State Track & Field Report: Day 1

PROVO, Utah-Thursday, as the new state track and field championship meet format was unfolded, the Wasatch Wasps’ boys and girls’ track and field squads competed against the elite in Utah in various events.

In order to accommodate six classifications, the Utah High School Activities Association has, for the first time, created Thursday state title competition.

The Wasatch boys, headed into championship Friday for the higher classifications, are currently in sixth place in the standings with 15 points. The leader in the overall standings in 5-A for the boys is the Springville Red Devils with 43 points. The 5-A girls’ leader is Woods Cross with 28 points. The Wasatch girls are currently in 15th place with 8 points.

To start things off, the Wasatch girls’ 4 x 100 team placed 12th overall in a time of 51.57 seconds. The Wasps who competed included Karissa Bingham, Katelyn Nichols, Mickey Scovil and Addy Larsen.

Also, in the 5-A girls’ 3200-meter run championships, the title was won by Skyline’s Camille Winterton in a time of 11:01.55 while Wasatch’s Abby West placed 15th overall with a time of 11:58.43.

Meanwhile, in the boys’ discus, Mitch Nelson of Wasatch placed seventh in class 5-A, posting a toss of 130-10.75 feet.

In the 5-A girls’ long jump, Wasatch’s Addy Larsen placed fifth overall with a leap of 16-06.75 feet with West’s Brianna White winning the 5-A crown with a leap of 17-09.75 feet.

The 5-A leader in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles after the prelims is Wasatch’s Bennet Hill in a time of 14.96 seconds.

In the 5-A boys’ 100-meter dash, Zachary Davis is currently the #2 seed headed into Friday’s finals as he ran a time of 10.99 seconds. Davis also placed fifth in the 5-A boys’ high jump with a leap of 6 feet 2 inches.

Additonally, Sydney Hales placed fifth in the girls’ 5-A 400-meter dash prelims with a time of 58.23 seconds. She also has a chance to compete for a state championship during Friday’s finals.

Andrei Hinckley placed third in the boys’ 5-A 400-meter dash prelims in a time of 49.99 seconds so he is among the Wasps who will get to compete for an individual state championship.

Also, Jake Hill is the #4 seed headed into Friday’s 300-meter hurdles finals for the 5-A boys. He posted a time of 40.70 seconds in the Thursday prelims in this event.

In the 5-A girls’ javelin, Quincy Olney placed eighth overall with a toss of 96-04.75 feet while her teammate, Ellie Tuddenham, finished 13th in the standings.

The Wasatch girls’ medley team placed sixth overall in a time of 4:22.74. The place gives them a medal in this event. The Wasps were represented in this event by Mickey Scovil, Sydney Hales, Makayla Bastos, Amy Richardson, Abbi Wright and Katelyn Nichols.

To close out competition for Day 1 of the championship meet, the Wasps’ boys’ medley team placed fourth overall in a time of 3:34.20. This fleet-footed Wasps squad consists of Kaden Smith, Zachary Davis, Andrei Hinckley, Kellin Olsen, Mack Hinckley and Kyle Weldon.
