FRESNO, Calif.-Friday, the Dixie State women’s track and field team competed at the first day of the Pac-West conference championships hosted by Fresno Pacific University.

The Trail Blazers were led by Skyler Storie, who placed second in the women’s 10,000-meter run in 37:22.82, earning eight points for Dixie State.

Beyond this, Manti High product Rebecca Opoulos placed 11th in the 100-meter hurdles and 10th in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing short of the finals in either event.

Emery High product Erin Hurst also competed at the championships, placing 11th in the challenging 3000-meter steeplechase, and also short of the finals.

Dixie State is currently eighth in the standings with 12 points.

Overall, the Azusa Pacific men and women’s squads are in the lead in their respective genders entering Day 2 of competition Saturday.

PROVO, Utah-Friday, Brigham Young University’s famed Robison Track hosted the first day of competition at the Robison Invitational. This meet was comprised primarily of Utah Division I schools, with Idaho State also competing on the storied blue track.

In the mens’ decathlon, Brigham Young’s Kevin Nielsen took the title, amassing 7,475 points. Southern Utah’s Erik Ostrom placed second with 6,205 points and Josh Thomas of Utah Valley was third with 5,995 points.

The women’s heptathlon saw Idaho State’s Ashley Vanvleet take the crown with 4,887 points, while her teammate, Shayla Henderson, was close behind with 4,837 points. Southern Utah’s Jentry Skidmore placed third overall with 4,579 points.

Several individual titles were also won on Day 1 of competition. These included Brigham Young’s Siale Vaitohi in the women’s hammer throw, with a toss of 178-07.25 feet. Her teammate, Jacob Foutz, won the men’s hammer throw title, posting a toss of 195-10.50 feet.

Jake Jarvis, also of Brigham Young, won the men’s pole vault crown with a leap of 16-10.75 feet.

In the women’s shot put, Utah State’s Brenn Flint took the crown with a toss of 54-03.25 feet and Utah Valley’s Daven Russell won the men’s shot put title, posting a toss of 58-06.75 feet.

The meet resumes Saturday.

LONG BEACH, Calif.-Friday, select Southern Utah University athletes competed at the Scott Invitational hosted by Long Beach State University. The first day of competition saw the Thunderbirds represented by Sharlie Dimick, who placed third in the women’s 5000-meter run in a time of 17:14.76. The Thunderbird men were also represented in the 5000-meter run, as Matthew Wright also placed third overall, posting a time of 14:37.24. The meet resumes Saturday.
