NCAA West Regionals: Day 1

SACRAMENTO, Calif.-Thursday, as the NCAA Track & Field West regionals commenced at Sacramento State University, numerous Utah-based athletes excelled and placed themselves in championship position.

All athletes who finish in the top 12 in their events at this meet will advance to the Division I national championship meet June 6-9 at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon at Eugene, Ore.

In the women’s javelin, Brigham Young’s Ashton Riner placed 11th to qualify for the national championship meet.

Her teammate, Andrea Stapleton, is the women’s high jump leader headed to Eugene, posting a leap of 5-10 3/4. Utah State’s Bren Flint placed fifth in the women’s shot put to also qualify, netting a toss of 54 4 3/4 feet.

For the running events, the top three finishers from every heat in every competition advanced to the quarterfinals, as well as the next top six times in these events.

In the men’s 400-meter hurdles, Brigham Young’s Max Scheible and Scott Mecham each advanced to the next round.

Their teammate, Brenna Porter, also advanced into the quarterfinals in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, finishing second overall after the first day of competition.

Talem Franco of Brigham Young advanced into the men’s 1500-meter run quarterfinals and in the women’s 1500-meter run, the Cougars saw Whittni Orton and Anna Camp each advance into the quarterfinals.

Southern Utah’s Tre James placed 18th overall in the men’s 100-meter dash, posting a tme of 10.37 seconds, the third-fastest time in school history, to advance to the quarterfinals.

In the men’s 800-meter run, Abraham Alvarado of Brigham Young placed fifth overall, advancing him to the quarterfinals as well. The women’s 800-meter run also saw Utah’s Caitie Faust placed 21st overall, as she advances to the quarterfinals in this event.

The men’s 10,000-meter run saw Brigham Young’s Rory Linkletter become the #1 seed headed into Eugene with a time of 29:14.29. Southern Utah’s Mike Tate placed second and Linkletter’s teammate, Connor McMillan placed third. Utah State’s Dillon Maggard advanced as the #7 overall seed while Brigham Young also placed Clayton Young (#9 overall) and Conner Mantz (#11 overall) in the meet at Eugene.

The meet resumes Friday.
