Arizona Hotshots Down Salt Lake Stallions 38-22 In First Game In Franchise History

TEMPE, Ariz.-John Wolford completed 18 of 29 passes for 275 yards and four touchdowns as the Arizona Hotshots routed the Salt Lake Stallions 38-22 at Sun Devil Stadium in the Alliance of American Football opener for both squads.

The Hotshots started the scoring as Wolford hit tight end Gerald Christian on a 5-yard scoring reception. Larry Rose III then succeeded on the 2-point conversion attempt for an 8-0 lead.

On the subsequent possession, the Stallions scored their first touchdown in franchise history on a 1-yard touchdown run by former University of Utah and NFL veteran tailback Matt Asiata with QB Josh Woodrum (10 of 22, 103 yards, INT) running in the 2-point conversion attempt to tie things 8-8.

The Hotshots then regained the lead for good as Wolford found receiver Rashad Ross (5 rec, 103 yards, 2 TD’s) on a 36-yard scoring strike.

Tailback Jhurell Pressley (19 touches, 94 scrimmage yards, rec TD) then scored on the 2-point conversion attempt to give the Hotshots a 16-8 lead they would not relinquish.

Woodrum was lost for the remainder of the game late in the first half when he incurred a hamstring injury and was replaced by Matt Linehan (7 of 13, 56 yards, TD/INT).

Additionally, in the win, Steven Johnson and Robert Nelson each posted an interception for Arizona.

Also posting impressive numbers for the Stallions were tailback Branden Oliver (9 touches, 46 scrimmage yards), tight end Anthony Denham (5 rec, 59 yards) and his fellow tight end Nick Truesdell (3 rec, 23 yards, TD).

The Stallions are next in action Saturday February 16 at Birmingham, a 26-0 winner over Memphis Sunday, for a 12:00 pm MST kickoff.
