U.S. Highway 40 In Wasatch County Makes Infamous List

WASATCH COUNTY, Utah-Per a report that aired on ABC 4 Utah Monday during the 6 o’clock news, U.S. Highway 40 achieved an infamous distinction.

Monday, News4Utah asked the Utah Department of Transportation where U.S. 40 ranks among the most dangerous highways in the Beehive State after four separate crashes this year claimed the lives of eight men and left a Duchesne couple in extremely critical condition.

All told, UDOT reports U.S. 40 is the fifth-most dangerous highway in Utah, trailing only I-15, U.S. Highway 89 in the Salt Lake City area, I-80 and S.R. 68 (Redwood Road).

Heber City resident Seth Richins, who drives U.S. 40 daily, told News4Utah “there are a lot of wrecks.”

UDOT spokesman John Gleason said the majority of fatalities are because of human error, so it’s actually more about the driver than the road.

However, Gleason also said if an “engineering solution” exists, UDOT will do whatever it can to ensure drivers are on the safest possible road they can be.
