Police investigating fatal attack at Alzheimer’s center

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (AP) — Police say they’re investigating a fatal attack at an Alzheimer’s center that left one man dead and another resident in custody.

The Deseret News reports that search warrants show a 69-year-old man shoved another 88-year-old resident, then got on top of the fallen man and started hitting him.

The documents say James Wright fell into a coma after the Sept. 19 attack and never awakened.

South Jordan Police Lt. Matt Pennington says the center called police the next day, when the younger man started attacking staffers. He was taken into custody, but is being held at an unspecified secure facility rather than the jail due to health concerns.

Pennington says prosecutors will decide whether mental health issues played a role.
