SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A man accused of helping run a multimillion-dollar opioid drug ring based out of a suburban Salt Lake City basement is talking with prosecutors about a possible plea deal.
Lawyers for Drew Wilson Crandall said in court documents Monday they’re working with prosecutors to “resolve this matter short of a trial” but need more time for negotiations.
U.S. District Judge Dale Kimball extended a plea-agreement deadline to Aug. 20.
Prosecutors say Crandall helped alleged ringleader Aaron Shamo in selling the powerful opioid fentanyl online in a scheme that once raked in $2.8 million in less than a year.
Defense attorneys, though, say he did limited online work for a longtime friend.
Crandall and his girlfriend were arrested last year when they landed in Hawaii to get married following a trip through southeast Asia and New Zealand.
