SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah lawmakers are planning to ramp up the collection of online sales tax after a key U.S. Supreme Court decision, though much of the new money is expected to go toward an already-passed tax break for manufacturers.
Officials estimated Thursday the state could collect $60 million in revenue on top of about $140 million it already takes in through voluntary agreements with sellers like Amazon.
Utah will need to pass a new law to start collecting that money, and a special session could soon be called to consider proposals.
Utah Tax Commission Chair John Valentine says one question that’s still undecided is how the state would deal with sites like Etsy that don’t sell things directly but give people an online platform to make their own sales.
