LDS Church, Rock Climbers, Reach Deal on Canyon Use

SALT LAKE CITY (AP)-Per a report from the Salt Lake Tribune, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and a Utah rock-climbing coalition have reached an agreement on how to use Little Cottonwood Canyon.

The Salt Lake City-based faith, which owns the Wasatch Records Vault a mile up the canyon, will allow the Salt Lake Climbers Alliance to use prime routes on Church-owned land in the area.

Furthermore, plans shall also be implemented to better protect the land.

This is necessary, per the Tribune, because paths climbers use to reach prime routes are eroding and may possibly damage Little Cottonwood Creek.

Salt Lake Climbers Alliance executive Julia Geisler believes the new agreement will allow the group to improve the infrastructure so erosion can be reduced.

The first paths in use date back to as long as 50 years ago, some of which were blazed by former Salt Lake City Mayor Tom Wilson.
