SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah businessman is challenging Salt Lake City mayor Jackie Biskupski in hopes of becoming the capital’s first ethnic-minority leader.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports Democrat David Ibarra made the announcement Tuesday backed by Salt Lake County Attorney Sim Gill and former mayor Rocky Anderson.
Ibarra’s father was a migrant worker from Mexico, and he and his brother went into foster care after his parents divorced and his father was drafted into the military.
If elected, Ibarra said he would address homelessness, help businesses develop and stay at the table through difficult negotiations with other leaders. The last statement appeared to reference Biskupski’s clashes with Republican state leaders over plans for a massive, largely state-controlled shipping hub in city limits.
Salt Lake City councilman Stan Penfold is also running for mayor.
