Davis County Jail inmate critically hurt in fall inside cell

FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) — A Davis County Jail inmate is recovering after falling while standing in an observation cell.

The Davis County Sheriff’s Office says the inmate, who was not identified, remained hospitalized Monday in Murray. His current condition was not immediately available.

The male inmate was brought to the jail around 2 a.m. by Layton police and appeared suicidal.

Jail officials say he cleared by a hospital to be transported to jail, where he was booked on an outstanding warrant.

According to authorities, the inmate was being watched when he stepped onto a bench. Before a deputy could reach him, he fell backward and hit his head on the concrete floor.

He regained consciousness but was immediately flown to a hospital.

The incident remains under investigation.
