Thurl Bailey Addresses Crowd At Wasatch High School

HEBER CITY, Utah-Monday evening, Wasatch High School hosted former Utah Jazz and Minnesota Timberwolves standout Thurl “Big T” Bailey who told his audience about how he “fell in love” with basketball.

Bailey, who was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in the Maryland suburbs near the nation’s capital, mentioned he was fascinated by Julius Erving, a basketball star also known as “Dr. J” who starred with the ABA’s Virginia Squires and New York Nets and later with the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers.

As he grew, (he currently stands 6-11), he began to emulate Erving’s game the best he could as he would play basketball in the backyard with his father.

He also spoke of how he overcame adversity as he was cut from the basketball team in junior high school, only to make the team in 9th grade.

He later told of his experiences in playing for Jim Valvano at NC State and how the Wolfpack improbably upset an elite Houston squad in the 1983 NCAA championship game.

Bailey then fielded questions from the audience and spoke of his experiences playing with legends of the game in Utah, such as Karl Malone and John Stockton.

Afterward, Bailey took time to speak with audience members in the lobby and also graciously took the time to take pictures with anyone who wanted them.
